Funeral Poems | Memorial Poems | Bereavement Poems

Funeral poems are also known as memorial poems, bereavement poems, poems about life, or poems about death. They are a great way to help celebrate the life of a loved one. Memorial poems can be used at anytime during a funeral service and are often used during a tribute speech, at the graveside, during prayers, and any other time considered appropriate to family and friends. Funeral peoms can also be used in all different types of funeral printed materials; funeral programs, prayer cards, memorial bookmarks, register books, etc.

We suggest picking a funeral poem that fits the life of the person best. Often, families prefer to use a poem that their loved one actually wrote.

  • When I'm Gone

When I’m gone to the end of my journey and I travel my last weary mile. Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned, and only remember the smile. Forget unkind words I have spoken, remember some good I have done. Forget that I ever had heartache and remember I had lots of fun. Forget that I’ve stumbled and blundered and sometimes fell by the way. Remember I have fought some hard battles and won, eve the close of the day. Then forget to grieve for my going, I would not have you sad for a day. But in summer just gather some flowers and remember the place where I lay, and come in the shade of evening. When the sun paints the sky in the west, stand for a few moments beside me and remember only the best.

  • When Tomorrow Starts Without Me

When tomorrow starts without me, And I’m not there to see; If the sun should rise and find your eyes, All filled with tears for me; I wish so much you wouldn’t cry, the way you did today; While thinking of the many things, we didn’t get to say.

I know how much you love me, As much as I love you; and each time that you think of me, I know I’ll miss you too; But when tomorrow starts without me, Please try to understand, That an angel came and called my name, And took me by the hand, And said my place was ready, in heaven far above, And that I’d have to leave behind, All those I dearly love.

But as I turned to walk away, A tear fell from my eye; For all my life I’d always thought, I didn’t want to die. I had so much to live for, So much yet to do, It seemed almost impossible, That I was leaving you.

I thought of all the yesterdays, The good ones and the bad, I thought of all the love we shared, and all the fun we had.

If I could relive yesterday, just even for a while, I’d say goodbye and kiss you, And maybe see you smile. But then I fully realized, That this could never be, For emptiness and memories would take the place of me.

And when I thought of wordly things I might miss come tomorrow, I thought of you, and when I did, my heart was filled with sorrow.

But when I walked through heaven’s gates, I felt so much at home. When God looked down and smiled at me, From his great golden throne, He said, “This is eternity, And all I’ve promised you.” Today for life on earth has passed, But here it starts anew. I promise no tomorrow, But today will always last, And since each day’s the same way, There’s no longin for the past.

But since you have been so faithful, So trusting and so true. Though there were times you did some things, You knew you shouldn’t do. But you have been forgiven, And now at last you’re free. So won’t you take my hand, And share my life with me.

So when tomorrow starts without me, Don’t think we’re far apart, For every time you think of me, I’m right here, in your heart.

  • When I Must Leave

When I must leave you for a little while—–
please do not grieve and shed wild tears and hug your sorrow to you through the years.
But start out bravely with a gallant smile:
And for my sake and in my name live on and do all things the same,
Feed not your loneliness on empty days,
But fill each waking hour in useful ways,
Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer
    and I in turn will comfort you and hold you near;
And never, never be afraid to die,
For I am waiting for you in the sky.

  • We Give Them Back

We give them back to you, O Lord, who first gave them to us; yet as you did not lose them in the giving, so we do not lose them by their return… For what is yours is ours also, if we belong to you. Love is unending, and the boundary of this mortal life is but a horizon, and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight. Lift us up, strong Son of God, that we may see more clearly… And while you prepare a place for us, prepare us also for that happy place, that we may be with you and with those we loved for evermore.

  • The Hand of God

Though today, you walk in sorrow, you will not be alone, there is One whose loving wisdom is far greater than your own. Put your trusting hand in His as a little child would do and He like a loving father will guide and comfort you! Day by day, there will come to you new faith, new hope, new light. You’ll find that stars unseen by day, shine through the darkest night. And though your heart is longing for the dear one who’s at rest, you’ll know before the journey’s end that God’s dear ways are best!

  • The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

  • Safely Home

    I am home in heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
    In this everlasting light.

All the pain and grief is over,
    Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in heaven at last

There is work still waiting for you,
    So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth-
You shall rest in God’s own land.

When that work is all completed,
    He will gently call you home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

  • The Precious Gift

    One gift, above all others
    God gives to treasure
One that knows no time, no place
    And one gold cannot measure.
    The precious, poignant, tender gift
    Of Memory—that will keep
Our dear ones ever in our hearts
    Although God gives them sleep.
    It brings back long remembered things;
    A song, a word, a smile
And our world’s a better place
because… We had them for awhile!

  • Peaceful Retreat

    Down a narrow hidden path
    Sought out by Wisdom’s eye
A peaceful place of refuge calls
    To come rest awhile beside
    Listen to the waters
    Falling over mountains steep
To gently flow for endless days
    Through eternity’s retreat
    And on the far horizon
    Of the never setting sun
The harvest of the whitened wheat
    Is very nearly done
As work on earth comes to a close
    Peace will be complete
    Surrounded by the beauty
    Of eternity’s retreat

  • Miss Me But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the day and the Sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room. Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not too long and not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared, miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey we all must take And each must go alone. It’s all a part of the Master’s plan, A step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick at heart, go to the friends we know and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me but let me go.

  • Loved Him

Father we entrust our loved one to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever.

Welcome him now into paradise, where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

  • Loved Her

Father we entrust our beloved mother to your mercy. You loved her greatly in this life: now that she is freed from all its cares, give her happiness and peace forever.

Welcome her now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

  • Let Me Go

When it comes my time to leave you,
And it will be hard I know,
Let me have my long deserved rest.
Just love me and let me go.

I’ve had a rich and wonderful life,
You, my loved ones, have made it so.
But when it’s time to say good-bye,
Just hold me and let me go.

Don’t try to hold me to the past,
For my steps are getting slow.
My hands are feeble, and my eye sight dim,
So, just kiss me, and let me go.

And when I cross the other side,
And see Jesus in His glory aglow,
You’ll know I walk faster and straighter.
Be happy for letting me go.

With all the love a mother’s heart could ever hold, Mom.

  • Labourer's Task Over

    Now the labourer’s task is over;
    Now the battle day is past;
    Now upon the farther shore
    Lands the voyager at last.
    Father, in Thy gracious keeping
Leave we now thy servant sleeping.
“Earth to earth and dust to dust,”
Calmly now the words we say,
Left behind, we wait in trust
    For the ressurection day.
    Father, in thy gracious keeping,
Leave we now thy servant sleeping.

  • If Tears Could Build A Stairway

If tears could build a stairway and memories were a lane
We would walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
Our hearts will ache in sadness and secret tears still flow
What it meant to lose you no one can ever know.
But now we know you want us, to mourn for you no more.
To remember all the happy times, life still has much in store.
Since you’ll never be forgotten, we pledge to you today.

A hallow place within our hearts is where you’ll always stay!

  • I'm Free

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free. I’m following the path God has laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call. I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day. To laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way. I found that peace at the close of day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joys. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss. Oh yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow. I wish you sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full. I savored much. Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief. Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and peace to thee. God wanted me now. He set me free!

  • Hospice Poem

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says: “There, she is gone!”

    “Gone where?”

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear the load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side say: “There, she is gone!” There are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: “Here she comes!”

    And that is dying.

  • God's Little Angels

When God calls little children to dwell with Him above, we mortals sometimes question the wisdom of His love. Perhaps God tires of calling the aged to His fold so He picks a rosebud before it grows old. God knows how much we need them and so He takes but a few to make the land more beautiful to view. The saddest word mankind knows will always be “Goodbye” So when a little child departs, we who are left behind must realize God loves children. Little Angels are hard to find.

  • Going Home

Many times in my in child hood when we’ve traveled so far
By nightfall how weary I’d grown
Father’s arms would slip around me and gently he’d say
    “My child we’re going home

    Going home, I’m going home
There is nothing to hold me here
I’ve caught a glimpse of that Heavenly land
    Praise God, I’m going home

Now the twilight is fading, the day soon shall end
Lord, I get homesick, the farther I roam
But the Father has led me each step of the way
    And now I’m going home

    Going home, I’m going home
There is nothing to hold me here
I’ve caught a glimpse of that Heavenly land
    Praise God, I’m going home

  • God Saw She

God saw she was getting tired and a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around her and whispered, “Come with Me.” With tearful eyes we watched her suffer and saw her fade away, Although we loved her dearly we could not make her stay. A golden heart stopped beating hard working hands to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best.

  • God Only Loans His Angels

God only loans us His Angels for a very short time
His gift to us is most sublime.
There is no promise how long they’ll stay
Just know they’re here to light your way
What’s left for you the love you’ve known
The life you’ve shared you’ll call your own
The lessons he taught with his loving hand
The lives he’s touched while upon this land
So love these angels as long as you can
And know someday you will again hold their hand.

  • The Garden of Promise 2

There is a place, I have been told,
    Beyond an open gate
    All have been invited
Where friends and loved ones wait
    It holds eternal promise
    Of everlasting peace
No pain or sorrow ever comes
    And teardrops there have ceased
    Abundant life is evident
    Constant, fresh and new
    A garden of provision
    With eternity in view
    The promise is awaiting
    A place we can abide
    Fulfilled for all who answer
    The call to come inside

  • Footprints 2

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to him, and the other the LORD.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at thefootprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.
This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it. “LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints.
I don’t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.”
The LORD replied, “My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering, when you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”

  • Fireman's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage, give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age. Help me embrace a little child before it is too late, or save an older person from the horror of that fate. Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout, and quickly, and efficiently to put the fire out. I want to fill my calling, and to give the best in me, to guard my every neighbor and protect his property. And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life, please bless with your protecting hand my family, friends and wife.

  • Do Not Ask Me To Remember

Do not ask me to remember.
Don’t try to make me understand.
Let me rest and know you’re with me.
Kiss my cheek and hold my hand.

    I’m confused beyond your concept.
I am sad and sick and lost.
All I know is that I need you
To be with me at all cost.

Do not lose you patience with me.
Do not scold or curse or cry.
    I can’t help the way I’m acting,
Can’t be different ‘though I try.

Just remember that I need you,
That the best of me is gone.
Please don’t fail to stand beside me,
Love me ’till my life is done.
