Recently we have been getting a lot of calls from people asking if we make printed "obituaries" or have "obituary templates". Basically obituary templates are the same thing as funeral program templates. Obituary templates are also know across the glode as funeral programs, memorial programs, funeral programs templates, funeral brochures, funeral folders, funeral bulletins, etc.

So to help make things more clear for our customers. We also added obituary templates to our drop down selector when you begin a new project. We have already seen this help avoid confusion.

This online application enables funeral homes and individuals to easily create custom funeral programs (folders), register books, bookmarks, thank-you cards, and much more, in-house for less. The application uses cutting edge photo-editing and blending technology that allows users to achieve the quality of high-end editing with exceptional ease-of-use and low cost (ranging from FREE to $9 for funeral homes). There are no setup fees and the software is free to use. The user only pays when they wish to download the final PDF for printing, which can also be emailed to families for proofing. In the application, users can drag-and-drop pictures and text anywhere on the canvas. Using HTML5 to Make Funeral Programs… What?!

In the past, the funeral industry has been known to be behind the times when it comes to new technology… but not this time!

Nine months ago, we at Zachary Douglass, LLC wanted to build an online application that allowed funeral homes and individuals to celebrate the life of those that have passed away through quality funeral printed products like funeral programs, prayer cards, memorial guest books, and other printed materials.

After a lot of research and testing, we narrowed it down to building the application in two different platforms; HTML5 or Flash. We found several pros and cons with both HTML5 and Flash. In the end we decided to go with HTML5 and we are glad we did. Our application is around a megabyte and is much faster than most Flash photo and text editors. Building an application in Flash requires a plugin download and would have been eight to ten times more "heavy".

Our application is basically an interactive website that prints to a PDF. The canvas element allows direct access to pixel data allowing for powerful image editing and manipulation. The HTML5 canvas in conjunction with javascript and CSS3 has enabled us to create a fairly robust image and layout editor.

Our current editor is only the beginning. There are even more powerful features in the works and we are definitely looking forward to using HTML5 to improve our application and business.

We have been working hard the past 9 months to build the world's first online funeral program photo and text editing application. Before we started we did some research into the different programming languages that would allow us to make an online application. We decided to take a leap of faith and program the whole application in HTML5, which has never been done before. At first we were a little hesitant to program in HTML5 because it doesn't have a proven track record yet, but so far everything is coming together and turning out better then we anticipate. This type of photo and text editing in HTML5 cannot be found anywhere else.

We are very excited to launch nationally as soon as we program the ability to print on different types of paper from different suppliers. We will start printing on paper stock that is distributed by Messenger, FuneralOne, and Frazer Consultants. These suppliers provide precreased and microperfed paper that makes it easy to produce a finished product. Much of the paper stock that is microperfed will allow you to produce a boarderless finished product.

For now, anyone can use our application and print on their own paper stock. If you want to save some money we suggest buying and printing on your own paper stock because it can save you anywhere from $20 to $80 per rheme of paper (500 sheets). If you represent a funeral home and you print about 3,000 pages per month, investing in an electric stack paper cutter becomes more realistic.

Funeral Programs

If you do not want to use or buy microperfed paper then you will eaither have to have a 1/8 to 1/4 inch boarder around the edge or you will have to cut off the boarders.

Printer technology does not print all the way to the edge. This is the main reason why you have to have a boarder around the edge. If you decide you want a boarderless finished product, we suggest finding a local printer that has a professional stack paper cutter. These electric stack paper cutters are made to cut several hundred sheets of paper at once. For instance, it will cut boarders off all four sides of a stack of 300 one-up funeral programs in about three minutes. Most professional printers will charge under $0.50 – $1.00 per cut. Resulting in a boarder less finished product in under five minutes for $2.00 to $4.00.

Again, as soon as we program the ability to print on the different types of paper supplied by a few of the main distributers, we will send out a national press release which will open up our new application to all funeral homes and individuals accross the nation. We know a lot of our customers are waiting for this ability. Thanks for being patient with us!
